Invasive Species Management in Park Natural Areas
Presenter: Jacob Brinkman, Ecologist with the Indianapolis Department of Public Works
This session will introduce the ever-growing problem of invasive species in our parks and natural areas, and how park managers and maintenance staff can best address this complex issue. Participants will learn about common invasive plant pests, recommended control methods, and ecological restoration strategies for parks and green spaces.
Pool Winterization
Presenter: Clint Anglin, Service Technician from Spear Corporation
Seasonal maintenance programs, focusing on varying weather conditions, is a must for outdoor pools in Indiana. Even though Spring startup programs seem to get the most public attention, it can be argued that a full winterization maintenance process is the most critical in protecting the pool shell, mechanical equipment and even the buildings and grounds. This presentation will discuss critical items and processes of pool winterization to help abate costly, preventable repairs for the next swimming season.
Pest Identification & Removal
Presenters: Aren Flint , Jeremy Weber, and Jake Bannister from Davey Resource Group
What pests and diseases are hot in Indiana? How best can we manage them? Hear short bits about integrated pest management (IPM) for foliar fungal diseases, pine and verticillium wilt, cicadas and gypsy moths, and other concerning invasive pests. Take the reminder or new recognition back to your parks and make IPM part of your parks program.
Rain & Pollinator Gardens
Presenter: Sarah Hanson, Ag & Natural Resources Educator from Purdue Extension Johnson County
Rainscaping is landscape design used with sustainable practices to prevent polluted runoff from reaching water bodies. Sarah will discuss some options for rainscaping to help direct stormwater to be collected and filtered by plants/soils. The Extension office in Johnson County has a rain barrel and rain garden to increase community education and improve water quality. Many of our landscape plants attract pollinators as well.
