The Indiana Park and Recreation Association had the chance to discuss Schererville Parks & Recreation with its recreation coordinator, Josh Barns. Please continue reading below to learn more about Schererville Parks & Recreation.

What is your favorite memory at your park agency? - My favorite memory is our annual event, Hocus Pocus Party in the Park. This event brings families together to celebrate their favorite time of the year...Halloween, but in July. This is a free event for everyone. There is a helicopter candy drop, DIY themed craft, games, contests and Hocus Pocus movie. The highlight is of course the helicopter candy drop. The joy in their faces is truly remarkable.

How does your agency contribute to the community? - Schererville Parks creates events and programs that draw all types of families and individuals together. We strive to make exciting, enjoyable, and memorable experiences for all ages. We want our Community to get out and have FUN together!

What special events is your park agency known for? Please describe each one. -

Schererville Fest - Over 20 years of celebrating Schererville, this event is our largest and longest running. Thousands of patrons come to enjoy music, beer, food trucks, amusement rides and more!

Schererville Fireworks - This is a town staple. This 5 hour event sees over 3k people in one park! Each year we think, how can we make this better? Residents and non-residents come to enjoy music, beer, food trucks, crafters, kids activities and the best fireworks display around.

Holiday Craft Show - This event has grown to be a Region must! With over 100 crafters in attendance and over 1000 people in attendance. There is something for everyone at this event.

Daddy Daughter & Mother Son Dances - Schererville Parks brings out the big guns for these events. This ticketed event sells out each year. We create a theme and every dad/daughter goes all out to bring the magic to life. We provide a decorated venue, DJ, catered dinner, dance floor, photo opportunities and more.

How has your experience with IPRA benefited your park agency? What are some of the most rewarding aspects of your membership? - IPRA has given us new ideas and also more insight on how we can grow our department. It allows us to connect with other departments and business to provide a better recreational events and programs
